The League of Unbiased Theater has introduced the half dozen recipients of the 2024 New York unbiased Theater Awards, honoring “excellent management, service, artistry and dedication to the indie and Off-Off Broadway theatrical panorama.”
Everett Quinton Award – Kevin R. Free, author, performer, director and creative director of Mile Sq. Theater. (“We make issues on a shoestring and we come collectively to make it occur – BECAUSE WE HAVE TO.”)
Ellen Stewart Award – The Muse Challenge, an experimental initiative that facilities ladies theater actors, founder and creative director Jocelyn Kuritsky. (“I would like individuals to really feel that they don’t seem to be alone or lonely.… Indie/OOB is for large dangers — the most important.”)
Caffe Cino Award – Homes on the Moon Theater Company, based in 2001 and led by creative director Emily Pleasure Weiner. (“There was a calling for brand new work, tales, and voices that weren’t typically or ever heard,”)
Excellent Stage Supervisor Award – Berit Johnson, who has been working in Indie Theater in NYC since 1996 as a stage supervisor and prop designer, together with with Untitled Theater Firm #61 (“Berit is a collaborator, in each sense of the phrase,” UTC’s Edward Einhorn.)
Indie Theatre Champion Award – Rev. Micah Bucey, Senior Minister at Judson Memorial Church in Greenwich Village, a neighborhood dedicated to expansive spirituality, radical social justice, and uncensored artistic expression. (“..a bit house, a bit story, and a bit group of individuals can at all times mightily bother the lethal waters of complacency…”)
Creative Achievement Award – Theresa Linnihan, performer, designer and affiliate director for almost 30 years of the Czechslovak American Marionette Theater, in addition to a participant and producer for The Puppet Co-op, (“”To me, theater is an instance of the world at peace. Peace is dynamic, adaptable, a battle of personalities and concepts”)
A celebration of the award recipients will likely be held on September ninth, 2024, on the indie theater venue Brooklyn Artwork Haus
The New York Unbiased Theater Award, now in its second yr, is sponsored by The League of Unbiased Theater, a decade-old arts advocacy group that realized the necessity for such an award after the long-running annual New York Revolutionary Theater Awards for Off-Off Broadway ceased to exist (as did its sponsoring group, the New York Revolutionary Theater Basis) in 2020.
